The 127th Manchester derby proved to be a memorable day for all Manchester City supporters. City began the match as the much brighter and Trevor Sinclair gave City the early advantage by scoring from a rebound from a Joey Barton shot. Only moments later, Darius Vassell casually scored the second goal for City and they were cruising. Ruud Van Nistlerooy pulled a goal back for United. Albert Riera made his debut for City and was outstanding. Robbie Fowler scored late on in the match to win the tie for City 3-1.

The match commenced at a fast pace and City went ahead early on as Nicolas Anelka slotted home City’s first after 5 minutes. Ole Gunner Sloskjaer leveled the score line shortly after however Shaun Goater was on hand to score City’s second as his shot curled past Fabian Barthez to minutes prior the first half interval. Goater shortly afterwards scored his 100th goal for the club as he capitalized on a mistake made by Gary Neville to score their third and seal a famous victory.
