Manchester City dominated English football in the early 1970’s consisting of a very delightful squad. City finished the season off in eighth place. They came off the back of a splendid previous season which saw them win the FA Cup trophy and the European Cup Winners Cup. Maine Road boasted a fine team during the early 1970’s, a side featuring Tony Book, Alan Oakes and Francis Lee. Their talent was strong and City showed their value in the league during the 1970-71 season, they finished the season off in forth place, arguably one of the best sides through out the campaign. City collapsed in the domestic cup competitions as they crashed out in the third round of both competitions. They faired little better the following season in the cups; however they reached the last sixteen of the FA Cup, losing to Sunderland.
City reached the league cup final during the 1973-74 season and met Wolverhampton Wanderers in the final. City lost the tie 2-1 despite dominating the encounter through out.
Manchester city were awful in the domestic cup competitions the following season as they crashed out in the third round of both the FA Cup and League cup, losing to Manchester United, 1-0 in the FA Cup. Manchester City finished off the 74-75 season in a respectable 8th position in the first division.
