City made a slow start to the 1960’s, they had a decent league campaign during the 1960-61 season, finishing off in 13th place. The Sky Blues reached the forth round of the FA Cup, losing 2-0 to Everton.
City faired slightly better the following season in the league, they finished off the season in 12th place. They crashed out early in the first round of the league cup losing to Ipswich Town. The 62-63 season saw City reach the quarter finals of the League Cup, however they clearly did not take the competition seriously as they were hammered 6-0 against Birmingham. The Sky Blues reached the last sixteen of the FA Cup, however they crashed out losing 2-1 to Norwich City. Manchester City crashed in the league, they were poor through out the campaign and it came to no surprise as they finished in 21st position in the league, in turn demoting the club to second division football.
The following two seasons, proved to be two poor league campaigns for City, as they finished 6th and 11th in the league, no where good enough for promotion back to the top flight. The only glimpse of encouragement during the two seasons was reaching the semi finals of the league cup, losing eventually to Stoke City.
