Manchester City commenced the 1950’s in great fashion. They were adamant of an immediate return to the top flight during the 1950-51 campaign and they received their just rewards by the end. City were outstanding through out the campaign and finished off strongly in second place. The two following seasons back in the first tier of English football was not as fruitful, they finished 15th and 20th respectively in the league. The 1953-54 season saw little improvement as City could only manage to reach a dismal 17th position, they also faltered in the FA Cup, losing 1-0 to Spurs in the forth round. City made a dramatic improvement during the 1954-55 campaign, they finished in a highly respectable 7th place, their FA Cup form also peaked, reaching the final, however they lost an affair against Newcastle, 3-1. However City were also sure in the FA Cup the following year and their determination earned them a place once again, in the final. The 1956 FA Cup final between Manchester City and Birmingham City was a great night for all City fans, they came out on top 3-1 and the hero of the hour proved to be the goal keeper, Bert Trautmann. City was deadly in the league through out the season and they finished in a strong 4th place. Their league form dipped the following season, finishing the campaign off in a lowly 18th position, just avoiding relegation. They faired even worse in the FA Cup, crashing out to Newcastle in the third round. City did severely improve during the 1957-58 season and it came to no surprise as they finished off strongly in fifth place. For the second year running, City crashed out of the FA Cup in the third round, losing to West Brom, 5-1. The 1958-59 season proved to be a debacle for the Sky Blues, they were fortunate not to get relegated as they stumbled to 20h position in the league and they one again suffered from an early exit from the FA Cup, on this occasion they received a 5-1 hammering against Southampton.
