In an FA Cup encounter that produced a fine 1-0 victory for City, the man who brought the first of many trophies to the city of Manchester was Billy Meredith, a skillful winger who was rated as the greatest footballer of his day. In the first all Lancashire final at Crystal Palace in 1904, Manchester City dominated a classic encounter and triumphed over Bolton Wanderers thanks to a goal from Billy Meredith, their captain and best player. Meredith played brilliantly on the right wing through out the tie and his great play paid off. He was a perfectionist, who could mix his game to beguile the opposition, dribbling, passing or cutting inside to shoot.

Manchester City 2-1 Portsmouth

In a match that finally saw Manchester City’s 19 year old goalkeeper, Frank Swift, fainting when his side lifted the FA Cup trophy. The tie between Manchester City and Portsmouth in the FA Cup final on 28th April 1934 proved to be a classic.
In the first half, Frank Swift was heartbroken as he allowed a cross to skid off his wet hands and into the back of the net. However the City striker, Fred Tilson promised him that he would score on two occasions in the second half to make up for it. Tilson was as good as his word; however nerves had so affected Frank that he fell over in a dead faint at the final whistle. Frank Wift, 12 years later on, made his full England international debut.
